This is a highly accomplished and extraordinary first novel. The story is set in and around a small London (?) park. Primarily it centres on the lives of four people.TC, a disadvantaged and neglected boy and his relationship to Jozef, a lonely Polish immigrant; Sophia a widow and her granddaughter, the cosseted and privileged Daisy.
The story describes the ‘seasons’ with remarkable observation and detail, and although it can be a little ponderous at times, it remains engaging and always poetic. The author’s sensitivity and perception of loneliness and the ages of the characters are both happy and sad. It is without doubt, a beautiful and graceful book about people, nature and the relationships that connect them all.
Simply a wonderful read.
